President Bill Cronin opened the meeting at 7:08 PM – there is no quorum, this will be a meeting of discussion, no votes can be taken

Guests:

Steve Thomas, Dessie Longinidas – they are working with community leaders, Town councilors, and Town attorney, on drafting a petition to ban single use plastic bags with handles within the Town of Barnstable.

  • Statistics –
    • Uses 30 billion /yr. consuming gas & oil commodities.
    • 1 re-usable bag = 1,000 single use
    • Many alternatives – paper, bring your own cloth or recycled bags.
    • 1,000 year to photo degrade, they never fully disintegrate.

There are already some towns (Harwich, Falmouth, and Provincetown) on the Cape that have adopted this, and it is becoming a national initiative.  They are targeting their first reading to the Council July 9, working with Attorney David Houghton, and some councilors to sponsor (Hebert was one of them).  The proposed ordinance would provide businesses 12 months to comply, set with fines which accelerate with each infraction.

The are asking GHCA for support, a letter to the councilors, or asking for GHCA member to get signatures for presenting the proposal to the council on July 9th.

Due to lack of quorum, Board is unable to vote on any action to support. For more information google “plastic bags bans.”  This effort is based out of the Unitarian Church in Barnstable.

Board agreed we would post the information on GHCA website, and provide members the contact information and if they wanted to support the effort and obtain signatures. Ms. Longinidas agreed to attend annual GHCA meeting to provide materials and solicit support, and will email information to post on the GHCA website. (Note: Ms. Longinidas did come to the annual meeting, but unfortunately was missed on the agenda).
