Marketing Task Force – August Update

GHCA Coordinates the Voices of the Village

Voices of the Village is a program under the auspices of the Greater Hyannis Civic Association.  The civic association continues in a sponsoring, cure coordinating and facilitating role for the 5 task forces – Supporting our Youth; Police, decease Drugs and Crime; Neighborhoods; Marketing; and Rental Regulations.    We are very proud of the progress being made by all the task forces.  The next general  meeting for the town to hear about the progress of the Voices of the Village and our plans for the next stage will be Tuesday October 25th .

We salute the Hyannis Harbor Hawks on winning the Western division of the Cape Cod Baseball League and for placing first overall in the regular season.  Our best record in decades.  Also thanks to the Friends of the Hyannis Public Library on their successful Teddy Bear Picnic.

The Greater Hyannis Civic Association has adopted a plot on the corner of Pleasant St and South St.  Under the leadership of Milton Berglund, capsule  the area has been cleaned up, a garden plot created, bare spots in the grass filled in , the plot portion planted and landscaped.  Our perennials  have taken root even in the hot weather and we look forward to a beautiful square in the next growing season.  Members of the association take turns weekly assuring the plantings are weeded and doing well.  We thank the town’s Growth Management Department  for sharing some of their excess perennials with us.  We especially thank Joe Marshall from Structure and Grounds for fixing the irrigation system on the square, providing us good soil and also bricks that we used to landscape the plot.

The Civic Association will also be holding its annual picnic at Veteran’s Beach on Tuesday August 23rd at 5 pm.  John Doherty and Debra Dagwam are coordinating the event.   Drinks and dessert will be provided.  Bring your picnic supper and share your summer experiences and your comments about the village with other people from the village.  A member of the Civic Association will be leading games for the kids.  This event is open to all residents of Hyannis, Hyannisport and West Hyannisport and their supporters.

We will be holding a candidates night on Tuesday, October 18th for all candidates on the ballots in the precincts in Hyannis – Candidates in Precincts 3, 9, and 13 and for town wide elections.   Save the date and watch for more information on specific times and places.

It is not too early to think about the Hyannis Village Stroll on Saturday December 3rd.  The civic association is proud to sponsor and run the Harbor Lighting and Boat Parade component of the day.  For those boat owners in the area, please keep your boat in the water and start thinking of how you can decorate it for the boat parade.  The lighted boats accompany Santa into the harbor while the businesses and homes around the harbor join in the festivities.  The registration forms for boats, residences and businesses and more information about the evening are available in the events section on our website, www.hyanniscivic.com.  Come join us in a great Hyannis tradition.

We are very proud of our membership card discount program.  Our local merchants have been very supportive of the organization.   Each  membership  card is also a discount card that can be used an unlimited number of times at 18 restaurants and businesses in the village.  Please go to our website to learn more about our program and to get a membership form.  We welcome all individuals who have an interest in Hyannis to join the Greater Hyannis Civic Association.  Please feel free to contact us with your concerns and issues at our website or by emailing us at GreatHyannis@aol.com.

MARKETING HYANNIS TASK FORCE

As the Summer of 2011 winds to a close, ampoule the work of the Marketing Hyannis Task Force will begin to pick up.  We will be meeting in September to focus on the efforts of our two sub-committees, medical marketing and co-branding Hyannis and stimulating membership in the Greater Hyannis Civic Association (GHCA).

Thus far in 2011 we have already noticed a fairly significant increase in membership in GHCA, no doubt a reflection of the two large community meetings held earlier in the year as well as the enthusiastic response by many to serving on one or more of the Voices of the Village Task Forces.  The Voices of the Village initiative clearly struck a nerve and the resulting work of the five Task Forces has been gratifying to the participants and important to the community.  But, the Marketing Hyannis Task Force understands that the Voices of the Village program will end at some point, probably in 2012, though certain projects created by the Task Forces may have a life beyond that date or be subsumed by other organizations or the Town of Barnstable itself.  However, the Marketing group also believes that the Association is the best positioned village organization to serve as a long term vehicle to maintain community focus on issues of importance to our neighborhoods in Hyannis, Hyannisport and West Hyannisport.  Sustaining a long term effort requires maximizing membership and, as important, finding members who can devote a reasonable amount of time and energy to furthering its mission.   Thus, our interest in increasing Association membership.

The best reason to become a member of GHCA is the most obvious one:  you can help positively influence the quality of life in your town, village and neighborhood.  It is one thing to complain it is quite another to take effective action.  Actively working to create change – make substantive improvements – with respect to community issues can be hard work and, at times, frustrating.  But, it can be very satisfying and also be a huge morale booster.  Working together we can make a difference!

There are other, more practical reasons to join.  Membership in GHCA will result in you receiving a discount card to area businesses, which would likely result in more than offsetting the modest membership fee.  For more information about the Association please see our website at http://hyanniscivic.com or e-mail us at GreatHyannis@aol.com

If you would like to know more, you are cordially invited to the annual GHCA membership cookout on August 23, 2011 at 5 PM, at Veteran’s Beach on Ocean Street in Hyannis.  Meet your neighbors, make new friends, ask about the Greater Hyannis Civic Association and, most important, have a good time.  See you there!
