Result of Fire Station Vote

There was an error in our post yesterday about the meeting to vote for or against the new Hyannis Fire Station.  It should have said that the meeting is on Wednesday at 7pm at the Barnstable High School performing arts center.  Sorry for the confusion.

Please join the Town of Barnstable Growth Management Department to begin a discussion about the revitalization of the Main Street East End streetscape. This community process will result in a concept plan reflecting the community’s ideas and requests for streetscape improvements.
The proposed $19.8m new Hyannis Fire District building was voted down by voters at the special district meeting on March 5th at BHS. There were 379 total votes counted, cheapest 210 Yes, shop 169 No. The vote needed a 2/3 majority (or 252 votes) to pass, drugs which it didn’t get.

The meeting was very well attended, and all were in favor of a new station, but not the proposed one. Individuals had the opportunity to raise concerns about the proposed fire station and about the process of not waiting until the district election vote in May when more district citizens will be available to vote.  The May vote can be held by secret ballot throughout the day.

Many thanks to the GHCA members and other residents of the Hyannis Fire District who attended last night’s meeting as well as to those who participated throughout this process. The GHCA will continue to work together to find the best solution for both the Hyannis Fire Department and the rate payers.
