Supporting Our Youth – August Update

Blog Post #2

The Supporting Our Youth Task Force has been busy at weekly meetings putting together three different types of programs that we think will enrich the lives of youth in Hyannis.

First, the group has been amazed by the outpouring of volunteers for the Summer Reading Program which runs Monday through Thursday at the Hyannis Public Library (11am-12pm) and the Hyannis Youth and Community Center (4-5pm). The program, which runs from August 1-25, helps students in grades 4-8 complete their required summer reading books. It is supported entirely by volunteers and bolstered by generous book donations from local residents. This pilot program will continue in the form of drop-in Homework Help during the school year for students in 4th-12th grade at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center, United Cultures Resource Room, from 2:30-6pm. We are still actively looking for volunteers (ages 14 and up) for the school year program.

Second, the task force has decided to implement a kindergarten mentoring program starting in the fall of 2011. The group has had guest speakers talk about various topics and is beginning to develop a comprehensive mentor training program with hopes of adding a grade each year as the program grows. Mentors are always needed (aged 21 and up).

Third, through the generous support of the Hyannis Harbor Hawks and Faith Assembly of God Church, we have received camperships to the Hyannis Harbor Hawks Youth Baseball Academy and Kiddie Kollege’s summer camp program. These are the first two sponsorships for the Childhood Enrichment Opportunities committee and they hope to receive more camperships, lessons, activities and sporting events to donate to children in need. By partnering with local schools and social service agencies, we can identify children that might like to participate in extracurricular activities but cannot due to financial difficulty.

Overall, it has been a busy and productive summer for the Supporting Our Youth Task Force. This is a great opportunity for local residents to support the amazing work that is done to help youth make positive life choices.
